Become a Merit Badge Counselor - El Dorado District Only


The Essentials of Merit Badge Counseling

This PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes covers the required procedures for merit badge counseling, clarifies the role of counselors in the BSA advancement program, and discusses the appropriate approaches to use in working with Scouts. Merit Badge Counselor Registration

Any Scouter interested in becoming a Merit Badge Counselor must complete all of the following:

1. Fill out the BSA Adult Application with position code 42, Merit Badge Counselor including the signed Disclosure Agreement.

  • YES, even if you are already registered in another position.

2. Fill out the Merit Badge Counselor Information Sheet (Legibly please) Limit of 8 merit badges per counselor.

Please note there are special training requirements for Aquatics, Climbing and Shooting Merit Badge counselors. You can find them in the link below "The Merit Badge Program" under About Merit Badge Counselors.

3. Make sure you have taken the new Youth Protection Training introduced in April 2018.

Send all three completed items to Tim Liston either hard copy or email to DO NOT send to Council office. 

This applies to El Dorado District only. If you are in a different district, please contact your District Committee in order to send it to the correct person in your district.

Merit Badge Counselors will be asked annually if you want to continue. If you so desire, you will be asked if there are any changes in your Merit Badge list or contact info. I will ask you to renew your Youth Protection Training if needed, but you will not have to fill out another adult application.
